WHAT ARE PLASTICS ?

WHY DO WE NEED A CIRCULAR ECONOMY ?

Plastics are extremely and widely used in several applications: PET/HDPE plastic bottles, packaging, vehicles, household appliances, building, agriculture, etc. As a result, plastic waste can be found in all post-consumption sectors. Plastics are generally made up of different polymers (polyolefins, polyesters, polyurethanes, etc.) which contain additives: addition of dyes, pigments, stabilizers, plastifiers, etc.).

There are many reasons to recycle plastic bottles. For starters, recycling reduces the pollution that can come from the chemicals used to make these bottles. Recycling also helps cut down on the amount of trash thrown into landfills, so our garbage does not take up as much space. Recycling also creates direct and indirect jobs for people who collect recyclable things as well as in the process of upcycling and downcycling.

Recycling is good for the economy and the environment, and it is easy to do.

  • The basis to achieve recycling, is to put aside recyclables into the right collecting bins after usage
  • You can also do more by encouraging your family to adopt this lifestyle to contribute to this process. Education starts at home with respect to segregating recyclables at source as well as adopting same at school with students, teachers, principals etc. in educational modules, thus setting up recycling programs
  • You can also help organising cans and bottles “collection drives events” to pick up litter and sort out recyclables in public areas collecting bins
  • Proper sorting at source (from home/ or consumption place) is important to guarantee its effectiveness
  • Proper sorting and deposit in bins leads to intelligent Re-Use / Upcycling or Recycling
  • Last but not least, spread the word that sorting is easy.

TRACKING YOUR RECYCLABLES

Why should we bother apply sorting habits?

Plastic bottles collected in collecting bins are typically sent to recycling plants called materials recovery facilities that sort them from other recyclables and package them into bales.

We bring you the locations of all collecting bins around Mauritius at one click through Google localisation.

Recycling ensures that a circular economy is established when recyclables materials are properly sorted and reach recycling facilities. Collectors are an integral part to this sustainable way of doing business. Through organisational efforts of Mission Verte, We-Recycle, New Invaders Club, Reso Green, PolyPet, Surfrider, producers’ association etc., the network ensures proper recycling process. Income opportunities have been created. Every year 50% of PET Plastic Waste is collected in Mauritius including Rodrigues Island for recycling. This network is an invaluable part of the recycling chain.

YES NO SOLUTIONS #MOKONSIAN#MOPRANKONT

In 2020, Mission Verte, We-Recycle, etc., came up with the YES NO SOLUTIONS – #MOKONSIAN#MOPRANKONT Initiative to assemble NGOs, citizens and local businesses in the private sector to work together on the plastic waste pollution as one team.

Through the collaboration of all stakeholders, we aim to overcome the hurdles of plastic waste pollution by adopting new environmentally friendly lifestyles, economic and industrial solutions for the future generations of Mauritius.

We strongly believe in making Mauritius, the best sustainable circular economy in Africa.
